Wakayama Fishing Charter: Ryoeimaru, 8 Minutes from Inami Station

TOC

Introduction

Inami is a small town on the Wakayama coast, and its fishing port is an eight-minute walk from Inami Station on the JR Kisei Line. From the Hanwa Expressway, the Inami exit is three minutes away by car.

Ryoeimaru fishes out of Inami Port for red sea bream, chicken grunt, big yellowtail-type fish, large horse mackerel and two kinds of squid. It welcomes beginners, women and experienced anglers alike, and says you can come empty-handed: rods and reels are available to rent, and the fare includes bait, ice and rigs.

The boat holds a 4.6-star rating across 35 Google reviews. The phone booking and the Japanese on the day are the part I take off your hands.

The Fishing Experience – Step by Step 🎣

  1. Book by phone — I make the call in Japanese. Reviewers mention that the boat calls the day before to confirm whether it will sail, depending on the weather.
  2. Walk to Inami Port — Eight minutes on foot from Inami Station, or three minutes by car from the Inami IC.
  3. Pick up your gear — Rental rods and reels are available, and bait, ice and rigs are part of the fare.
  4. Fish — Sea bream, chicken grunt or yellowtail-type fish by day; squid on the evening trips.
  5. Drive to dinner — Shirahama, where the dining partner is, is about thirty minutes away by car.

Fishing Methods & Target Species

  • Red sea bream — One of the boat's listed targets.
  • Chicken grunt (isaki) — Reviewers describe an afternoon trip for chicken grunt with first-timers aboard.
  • Large yellowtail-type fish and big horse mackerel — Both on the boat's list.
  • Squid at night — The boat lists two kinds, aka-ika and surume-ika. One regular writes that the squid trip leaves at about 5:45 p.m. and fishes until around 11:30 p.m. or midnight, and others mention squid metal jigging.
  • A second boat on busy days — The same regular says that when there are many anglers, the boat runs two vessels, one with each captain.

🗣️ What Reviewers Say About This Charter

Ryoeimaru's 35 Google reviews keep coming back to how the crew looks after people who are new to it:

A group of five, three of them first-timers who had never fished for chicken grunt, booked the afternoon trip. They found the phone manner kind and the explanations careful, and the captain rang them himself to say the boat would sail.

— a Google reviewer

A beginner on a rough day of squid metal jigging wrote that the captain and the other anglers were all kind — the boat is large enough to fish sitting down, and the captain kept moving spots and giving advice.

— a Google reviewer

Another reviewer describes the family answering the booking line and explaining everything, and a captain who teaches rigs and technique before the trip and is constantly helping with depths, tangles and the landing net during it.

Budget Guide 💴

A day with Ryoeimaru runs $200–$300 per person. That covers arranging the trip, the booking in Japanese, and English-language support before and on the day.

Fishing Difficulty 🎯

Solo Travelers · Couples & Small Groups · Age limits and group minimums are set by each boat
Tackle rules differ too — some boats hire out rods and reels, some hire out nothing but life jackets. I confirm this boat's rules with the operator before you book; what is already confirmed for this one is in the Schedule section above.
Note: Catch results depend on nature — success is never guaranteed!

Schedule 🕘

The boat doesn't publish its departure times. According to a regular, the evening squid trip leaves at about 5:45 p.m. and returns around midnight; I confirm the times for your trip when I book.

The dining partner, Marukiyo, serves lunch from 12:00 to 14:00 (last order 13:30) and dinner from 17:30 to 21:00 (last order 20:30). It is closed on Tuesdays, and lunch is also off on Wednesdays.

What to Bring 🎒

☀️ Spring/Summer: Sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, plenty of water, and light snacks. The deck is fully exposed — no shade. Stay hydrated, especially on early-morning departures and the return leg.
❄️ Autumn/Winter: The sea is colder than on land. Dress at least two layers warmer than you would ashore, and bring a windproof outer layer.
👟 Footwear: Water-resistant shoes or sandals that can get wet and won't slip on a wet deck.
📦 Optional: Motion sickness tablets if you're prone to seasickness, a towel, a change of clothes, and a camera.
🚚 For travelers continuing to another city: Cool-pack delivery of your catch to your next accommodation can be arranged on request.

How to Get to Inami Port

Inami Port is in Inami, Hidaka district, Wakayama. It is an eight-minute walk from Inami Station on the JR Kisei Line, and three minutes by car from the Inami IC on the Hanwa Expressway.

Dinner After the Charter – Marukiyo 🍶

The dining partner for this boat is Umi Gohan Yama Gohan Marukiyo (海ごはん山ごはん マルキヨ), at 1572 Shirahama, Wakayama — 35.2 km from Inami Port, about thirty minutes by car, and a five-minute walk from the Shirarahama bus stop. It holds a 3.8-star rating across 124 Google reviews.

Marukiyo is known for kue, the longtooth grouper. Reviewers describe a full kue course — hot pot, sashimi, simmered head, fried skin chips and a rice porridge to finish — and one guest staying at a nearby hotel was told by the owner that kue is good all year round.

Whether Marukiyo will cook a catch you bring in yourself hasn't been confirmed, so please don't plan the evening around it. If it matters to you, I'll ask them before you travel.

Why Book Your Charter Through Me?

Most Japanese fishing boats accept reservations only in Japanese.
Partner restaurants typically do not advertise "cook-your-catch" or sushi-making courses on public-facing menus.
That's why I handle all direct negotiations and arrangements — so your day runs without friction.

  • ✅ I contact the captain directly in Japanese to confirm your date, party size, and preferred fishing style.
  • ✅ Before departure, I'll walk you through the full day schedule so you arrive confident and prepared.
  • ✅ I coordinate the dining experience and meal timing at the partner restaurant so everything connects seamlessly.
  • ✅ I handle any allergy, dietary, or special-requirements communication with the restaurant.
  • ✅ If bad weather forces a cancellation, I'll immediately propose alternative sightseeing options so your day isn't wasted.
  • ✅ On-call support in English throughout the day for anything that comes up.
  • ✅ I am the only guide in Japan specialising in fishing + dining packages for international travelers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • "I want to try fishing in Japan but have absolutely no idea where to start." 👉 That is exactly what I am here for — guiding international travelers through the whole process is my specialty.
  • "I only have one day here. Can I really fit fishing into my itinerary?" 👉 Often, yes — but departure and return times vary enormously, from pre-dawn starts to trips that finish after dark. See the Schedule section above for this boat, tell me your dates, and I'll work out what fits around the rest of your trip.
  • "Is it safe for kids and beginners?" 👉 Wearing a life jacket is the rule on Japanese charter boats, and many of the boats I work with take complete beginners. Age limits are set by each operator, though, and some do not take children at all — so check the Schedule section above, or ask me and I'll confirm before you book.
  • "I don't speak any Japanese. Will I be able to manage on the boat?" 👉 Of course. I brief you thoroughly in English beforehand and stay in contact throughout the day for anything that comes up.
  • "Can I rent fishing gear on the day?" 👉 It depends on the boat. Some hire out rods and reels; others hire out nothing but life jackets and expect you to arrive with your own tackle. I check what this boat does before you book, and if you need to bring your own I'll pass on the exact specifications it asks for.
  • "What if the weather is bad on my day?" 👉 Safety always comes first. If the charter is cancelled due to rough seas, I'll have an alternative day plan ready for you immediately.
  • "Do all plans require a minimum group size?" 👉 It varies by boat and by plan — some take solo anglers on a shared boat, while a private charter often sets a minimum. Tell me your party size and I'll find the plans that work for it.

Summary

An eight-minute walk from the station, a boat you can board with nothing but yourself, and a crew that reviewers describe again and again as patient with beginners. Ryoeimaru fishes Inami for sea bream and chicken grunt by day, and for squid into the night.

Afterwards, Shirahama and a kue dinner are half an hour down the coast. If you'd like to fish Inami, get in touch and I'll make the calls for you.
