Unique Japan Experience: Hakata Fishing & Fresh Sushi

boat fishing

Fishing. It is a traditional Japanese culture that only those who know Japan well would know about.

If you come to Japan, why not try a traditional Japanese experience rather than just visiting tourist spots?
In fact, fishing is one of Japan’s traditional outdoor pastimes. The experience of fishing in the beautiful ocean is a special pleasure known only to those in the know.
The fishing experience with “Kairiki,” departing from Hakata Port’s Kamome Plaza, lets you catch fresh fish yourself and then enjoy them at a partner shop—an unforgettable day in Fukuoka!
Access tip: From Subway Airport Line Ōhori-kōen Station it’s about 30–35 minutes on foot or roughly 10 minutes by car/taxi. From Fukuoka Urban Expressway Tenjin-kita IC it’s about 3 km.

Regional Characteristics

Fukuoka Tower is a 234-meter seaside landmark overlooking Hakata Bay and the cityscape. By day its mirrored façade gleams against blue skies; by night about 8,000 LEDs create seasonal illuminations. The observatory offers sweeping views—perfect for photos, dates, and first-time visitors. It’s also close to central Fukuoka, so you can pair a morning on the water with an evening panorama in one easy itinerary.

Access

In Fukuoka, we recommend a fishing experience with Kairiki departing from Hakata Port (Kamome Plaza).
Access is convenient: about 10 minutes by car from Subway Airport Line Ōhori-kōen Station, and roughly 3 km from the Tenjin-kita IC on the Fukuoka Urban Expressway. It’s easy to reach between sightseeing stops.

Features

The captain’s philosophy is warmly welcoming: “Whether you’re a first-timer, have little experience, or you’re a woman, I want you to enjoy fishing with peace of mind.” Since opening, the crew has offered hassle-free trips where you can come empty-handed and still have a great time. The captain’s kind personality shines through. Private charters are available so groups can relax together; shared trips are also offered. If you have questions, the captain and staff explain everything gently, so women and families with children can feel truly at ease.

Beginners need not worry.

If you’re wondering, “I’ve never fished—will I be okay?”, don’t worry! Kairiki has rental rods, reels, and more, so even beginners can join easily. With a spacious deck and clean restrooms, you can enjoy the day comfortably even if you’re new to fishing.

Let’s start fishing!

Kairiki’s crew is dedicated to making anglers happy!
Depending on season and plan, you can target favorites like swordtip squid (night fishing), cutlassfish, sea bream, and more in Hakata Bay and nearby waters—fun to catch and delicious to eat!

After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!

After fishing with Kairiki, drive about 30–40 minutes to Yasunaga Suisan in Kasuga City.
By public transport, it’s roughly 50 minutes from Ōhori-kōen Station to Nishitetsu Kasugabara Station plus a 3-minute walk.
Skilled fishmongers will fillet your catch and prepare sashimi or sushi—peak freshness and a uniquely Japanese delight!
If you feel it’s a bit far, please contact me from the form at the end—I’ll find a closer restaurant that can cook your catch near the fishing spot! And if you’re shy about calling the shop, I’ll gladly make arrangements for you.

Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake

The freshness of the fish means that it doesn’t have that fishy smell, and the fresh, shiny flesh is mouth-watering.
The sight of the fresh fish being cut up by the chef’s knife and transformed into sashimi, which combines the best of both worlds, is a wonderful work of art that you can enjoy with your eyes!

The sushi chef in Japan will cut up the fish you’ve caught and serve it to you!
Is there any greater luxury than being able to fully enjoy and experience Japan? As far as I know, there isn’t.
If you consult with the manager in advance, it should be possible to have them make sushi for you!
By all means, please enjoy Japanese culture and sushi to your heart’s content!

Finally

Fishing is not just about catching fish – you can also enjoy the refreshing feeling of being in nature and the sense of fulfillment that comes from obtaining your own ingredients. Then, while reminiscing about the day’s experience and enjoying a conversation with your family or friends who went fishing with you, you can enjoy eating the delicious, freshly-cooked fish. This is a luxurious experience that can only be enjoyed in Japan!
Why not make the day you and your family or friends spend around Hakata Port in Fukuoka a special one by adding a fishing experience with Kairiki?
