Fishing: a traditional Japanese culture known only to Japan experts

If you’re visiting Japan, why not try something a little more adventurous than the usual sightseeing and experience some of Japan’s traditional culture?
Fishing is a traditional Japanese activity that is known only to a limited number of Japan experts.
Today we’ll be introducing an unknown fishing spot that’s located right by Miyazu Station in Miyazu City, Kyoto Prefecture!

Regional Characteristics

The city of Miyazu is known for its historic streets and beautiful scenery facing the Sea of Japan, and nearby is Amanohashidate, one of the three most scenic spots in Japan. Amanohashidate is a 3.6-kilometer sandbar that crosses Miyazu Bay. Covered in pine trees, this sandbar offers beautiful views known as “Hiryukan” and “Shoryukan”. The seasonal changes in nature are also a highlight. In addition, the floating lantern and fireworks festival is a fantastic event that takes place on the Amanohashidate Canal, with countless lanterns floating down the river and fireworks being launched afterwards. The beauty created by the contrast between the lanterns and fireworks is sure to captivate you!

Recommended fishing boat

In Miyazu City, we would like to particularly recommend the fishing experience at Tidanesia.
Access is very convenient, and it’s only a 10-minute drive (taxi) from the nearest Nagasaki Station. You can also easily reach the fishing boat by train. It’s easy to get there by train, so it’s perfect as a little adventure in between your travels.
Even beginners can enjoy themselves with peace of mind, as the captain will teach you carefully, so you can also spend time there with peace of mind even if you are with women or children. And the most distinctive feature of the Tidanesia boats is their captain! He was hooked on bass fishing in his 20s, and worked at a lure shop. He worked and fished every day while living on the Oki Islands, and after acquiring a first-class ship’s license and training under a veteran fisherman with over 60 years of experience, he now runs the fishing boats!
Of course, rental equipment is available, so you can join without any preparation, and in addition to the spacious deck, there are also simple toilets, so even those who are not used to fishing can enjoy it with peace of mind.

Let’s start fishing!

The captain of the Tidanesia is a really kind captain! Especially with the experience plan, it’s only 5 to 10 minutes from the port to the fishing spot, so there’s no time to get seasick! Even if you’ve never fished before, you can enjoy it straight away.
The fishing method is simple, the traditional five-fish bait fishing. The fun of this fishing is that you never know what you’ll catch.
There is a wide variety of fish, and you can aim for fresh fish that are in season, but there are also lots of small, familiar fish such as horse mackerel, wrasse, rabbitfish, groupers, globefish, and threadfin bream!

After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!

After fishing at Tidanesia, why not visit Tidanesia, which is just a 15-minute ride away using the pick-up service! The captain himself will cook the fresh fish you’ve caught, and enjoying fresh fish that you’ve just caught is a special experience that you can only have in Japan.
The fact that the name of the restaurant and the name of the boat are the same shows the owner’s attention to detail!

Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake

The freshness of the fish means that it doesn’t have that fishy smell, and the fresh, shiny flesh is mouth-watering.
Even if the fish are small, the texture of the fish that have been raised in Miyazu is amazing, with a firm, springy flesh. In particular, the firm, sweet-tasting flesh of the kijihata rockfish is irresistible. And the umami of fish such as the rockfish and the aohata rockfish is packed full, so they are delicious no matter how you eat them, and the sweetness and umami seep out with every bite.

Small fish are coated in potato starch and deep-fried whole. Because they’re small, you can easily eat even the bones! Fresh fish is best when you can enjoy the full flavor of the fish by eating it simply!

Finally

Fishing is not just about catching fish, but also about the sense of refreshment you get from being in nature and the satisfaction of obtaining your own food. Then, you can enjoy eating the delicious, freshly cooked fish while reminiscing about the day’s experience and having a lively conversation with your family and friends who went fishing with you. This is a luxurious experience that can only be enjoyed in Japan!
Why not make your day in Miyazu City special by adding a fishing experience at Tidanesia to your day out with your family and friends?
