Fishing: a traditional Japanese culture known only to Japan experts
If you’re visiting Japan, why not try something a little more adventurous than the usual sightseeing and experience some of Japan’s traditional culture?
Fishing is a traditional Japanese cultural activity that is known only to a limited number of Japan experts.
Today we’ll be introducing an unknown fishing spot located about 15 minutes from Nishi-Maizuru Station in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture!
Regional Characteristics
Maizuru City is located in the northern part of Kyoto Prefecture, and is famous for its beautiful natural scenery and rich seafood. Nearby is Maizuru Red Brick Park, a collection of red brick buildings that were once used as warehouses for the Maizuru Naval Arsenal, and now include buildings designated as cultural assets, as well as the ruins of Tanabe Castle, which are now open to the public as a park. We recommend the Tore Tore Ichiba, where you can buy seafood straight from the boats and eat it there! It’s the kitchen of Maizuru City, used by both tourists and locals alike, and you can enjoy the charms of Japanese seafood to your heart’s content!

Access
In Maizuru City, we would like to recommend the fishing experience on the SPRINTER.
The access is very convenient, and it is only 10 minutes by car (taxi) from the nearest Nishi-Maizuru Station. You can also easily reach the fishing boat by train. Since it is easy to get there by train, it is also perfect as a little adventure in between trips.
Features
The captain’s motto is “Of course the catch is important, but most of all I will do my best to make sure everyone has a good time and goes home satisfied”, and he teaches very carefully, so even women and children can enjoy themselves in peace. And the feature of the SPRINTER boat is its captain! He has loved fishing since he was a child, and after graduating from university he went to work for a fishing tackle manufacturer, where he did PR work including TV appearances. While doing this, he began to want to feel the joy of fishing more closely to the action, and to share that joy, so he left the tackle manufacturer and started his own fishing boat business with passion!
Beginners need not worry
Of course, there are rental items available, so you can join in with nothing to worry about, and with a spacious deck and clean toilets, even those who are not used to fishing can enjoy themselves in peace.
Let’s start fishing!
The captain of the SPRINTER is really passionate! The trip to catch the “tilefish”, which is known as a high-class fish, is popular, but we will search for the fish and run through the sea in all directions! Since lure fishing is the main activity, even if you are not comfortable with live bait, it’s okay!
In addition to tilefish, you can also aim for various high-class fish such as scorpion fish and sea bream, which is attractive!
After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!
After fishing at SPRINTER, take the train to the inland area of Kyoto and visit Tsuriya!
This fish shop was started by a fishmonger with a strong sense of commitment, and they are extremely skilled at preparing fresh fish! The shop is small on purpose so that the manager can keep an eye on everything, and this is one of the features of this shop!
*Please note that children may be refused entry during busy periods, so it is essential to make a reservation in advance when visiting!
Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake
T he freshness of the fish means that it doesn’t smell fishy, and the fresh, shiny flesh is mouth-watering.
The sight of the fresh fish being transformed into sashimi by the chef’s knife is a wonderful work of art!
The fish shop was started with a commitment to quality, so the sake that goes with the fish is also carefully selected!
The owner personally selects the sake that goes with the fish dishes from sake from all over Japan, so even though it’s sake, it has a mellow, delicious watery taste!
If you’ve come to Japan, please give it a try!
Finally
Fishing is not just about catching fish, but also about the sense of refreshment you get from being in nature and the sense of fulfillment you get from obtaining your own food. Then, you can enjoy eating the delicious, freshly cooked fish while reminiscing about the day’s experience and having a lively conversation with your family and friends who went fishing with you. This is a luxurious experience that you can only enjoy in Japan!
Why not make the day you and your family or friends spend in Maizuru City a special one by adding a fishing experience on the SPRINTER?
