Fishing: a traditional Japanese culture known only to Japan experts
If you come to Japan, why not try a traditional Japanese experience rather than just visiting tourist attractions? One such experience is fishing. Fishing is a traditional Japanese cultural activity that is known only by a limited number of Japan experts. At the “Little-one” fishing experience, which is known only by those in the know and is located about 10 minutes by car from JR Omuta Station in Omuta City, Fukuoka Prefecture, you can enjoy a special day of catching your own fresh fish and then enjoying the freshly-caught fish at the restaurant!
Regional Characteristics
Omuta City is located at the southern tip of Fukuoka Prefecture, and in 2007 it was selected by Fubus magazine as one of the world’s 25 most beautiful cities.
The city is known as the gateway to Kyushu, and is loved by both tourists and locals alike for its historical spots and beautiful nature, including the Miike Coal Mine, which is registered as a World Heritage Site. In particular, Miike Port faces the Ariake Sea, and the sunrises and sunsets seen from here are spectacular, making it a hidden tourist spot.
The Omuta Ojiyama Festival is particularly famous in Omuta City!
The “Orochi-yama” is a huge float in the shape of a snake, measuring approximately 10 meters in length and 5 meters in height.
The float’s giant snake is fitted with a mechanism that spits out smoke from its mouth, and there is a legend that “basking in the smoke will keep you healthy and free from illness”, so you can see many spectators gathering there to receive the smoke on their bodies.
The climax of the festival is the scene where the two giant Orodashi floats face each other on a narrow street and threaten each other,
and the movements and shouts of the huge Orodashi floats colliding with each other are spectacular. It is a festival that you should definitely experience!
Recommended fishing boat
Access
In Omuta City, we would like to recommend the fishing experience at Little-one.
The access is very convenient, and it is only 10 minutes by car (taxi) from the nearest JR Omuta Station. You can also easily reach the fishing boat by train. It is easy to get there by train, so it is also perfect as a little adventure in between trips.
Features
The captain says, “Of course the catch is important, but since the business opened, I’ve always valued the fact that people say ‘that was fun!’. It makes me happy to see that smile!”, and his kind personality really shines through. If you have any questions, the captain and staff will be very happy to help you, so you can relax and enjoy yourself even if you’re with children or women.
And the feature of the Little-one boat is that the captain has been working hard to bring smiles to customers’ faces since the boat first opened in 2010! During that time, the boat has grown from its original small size to its current fifth generation. The boat’s size may have changed, but the captain’s aspirations have remained the same, and he still cherishes the Little-one name in order to fulfill his original goal!
Beginners need not worry
Even if you have no experience of fishing, don’t worry. At Little-one, there is a full range of fishing rods, reels and other equipment available for rental, so even beginners can join in with ease, and with the spacious deck and clean toilets, even those who are not used to fishing can enjoy themselves in peace.
Let’s start fishing!
The captain of Little-one is totally dedicated to satisfying his customers!
The boat goes out to various areas, but the most popular trip is the “Gomoku Tsuri” trip, where you can catch a variety of fish in the nearby sea!
The fish you can catch include sea bream, rockfish, horse mackerel, and bluefish, all of which are fun to catch and a shame to eat!
The fact that you can aim for a variety of fish species is very attractive!
After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!
After fishing at Little-one, take the train for about 30 minutes and visit Hiyoko Restaurant!
The captain opened this restaurant with the sole aim of making sure that the fishermen were satisfied! He wanted them to be able to enjoy the fish they had caught that day. This was the starting point for the restaurant, and it is a policy that is still cherished today. The appeal of this restaurant is not just the warmth of the captain, but also the fact that the food is also incredibly delicious. The way the fish is filleted and cooked is amazing!
Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake
The fish is so fresh that it doesn’t smell fishy, and its fresh, shiny flesh whets the appetite.
The way the fresh fish is transformed into sashimi with the best flavor by the chef’s knife skills is a wonderful work of art that you can enjoy just looking at it!
The owner of this restaurant has two faces: he is the captain of a pleasure fishing boat by day and the manager of a seafood izakaya by night. He is very particular about the way he prepares his fish, so he has put a lot of effort into the cooking methods he uses!
The fish he catches in the surrounding waters is stewed in a secret recipe that combines the tenderness of the fish with a sweet and spicy flavor.
If you come to Japan, you must try it!
Finally
fishing is not just about catching fish, but also about the sense of refreshment you get from being in nature and the satisfaction of obtaining your own food. Then, while reminiscing about the day’s experience and enjoying a conversation with your family or friends who went fishing with you, you can enjoy eating the deliciously cooked fresh fish. This is a luxurious experience that can only be enjoyed in Japan!
