Amami Fishing Charter, Kagoshima: Into the Kuroshio with Lures

TOC

Introduction

Eight catch photographs came in from this boat. Two show big red fish, one a brown-spotted grouper, and five show trevally-type fish — silver, dark, or speckled with blue. Seven were taken out on the water, and some show the outline of an island.

NO FISHING NO LIFE is a lure-only fishing boat working out of Kasari on Amami Oshima, an island in Kagoshima. Its website opens with a line in both languages: "Into the Kuroshio Current. Take it like you mean it."

It holds a 5.0-star rating across 67 Google reviews. The reservation and all the back-and-forth in Japanese is the part I take off your hands.

The Fishing Experience – Step by Step 🎣

  1. Book through me — The boat takes bookings through its online calendar, LINE and phone. I'll handle it in Japanese.
  2. Get the departure time the day before — The captain sends it on LINE between 18:00 and 20:00 the day before.
  3. Meet at Old Ushuku Fishing Port — 2.0 km from Amami Airport.
  4. Fish with lures — Jigging, light jigging or casting, depending on the season and what you want to catch.
  5. Handle the catch on board — The boat carries tools for bleeding and nerve-spiking, and ice is included.

Fishing Methods & Target Species

The boat's website splits its fishing into three styles. It welcomes first-timers to jigging and promises full support.

  • Jigging — Around 130–300 m of water, for amberjack, giant trevally (GT) and groupers.
  • Light jigging — 20–80 m with light 60–100 g jigs, for coral trout, groupers, emperors and other predators.
  • Casting — Best from April to December, for GT, dogtooth tuna, yellowfin tuna and skipjack.
  • A three-hour bait-fishing experience — On the small boat, with all rental gear included.

In the photos, a woman in a white cap and sunglasses holds a red-orange fish and, rod still in hand, a brown-spotted grouper. A man holds a red fish scattered with blue dots against an island. The trevally-type fish are held on the harbour wall, by two anglers side by side, and across one man's lap. I won't guess species from photos.

🗣️ What Reviewers Say About This Charter

One reviewer describes a gentle captain who handled the boat carefully so the jig dropped straight down, and who booked a restaurant that could cook the catch.

— a Google reviewer

Another, on a first long-distance trip, says the captain helped from the planning stage, and that despite slack tide his boat handling and choice of spots produced an amberjack of nearly 6 kg.

— a Google reviewer

A third, on a light-jigging trip, says the captain took care to avoid seasickness, and that even a near beginner caught plenty in very clear water.

Budget Guide 💴

A day aboard NO FISHING NO LIFE runs $200–$300 per person. That covers arranging the trip, negotiating the booking with the boat in Japanese, and English-language support before and on the day.

The small boat is a private charter for up to three anglers, from four hours up to ten. Rental rods and reels are available for light tackle and for big-game jigging and casting, but you bring your own jigs and lures; a vest-type life jacket can be borrowed free. Payment is made before boarding, and cards and e-money are accepted only on the large boat.

Fishing Difficulty 🎯

Solo Travelers · Couples & Small Groups · Age limits and group minimums are set by each boat
Tackle rules differ too — some boats hire out rods and reels, some hire out nothing but life jackets. I confirm this boat's rules with the operator before you book; what is already confirmed for this one is in the Schedule section above.
Note: Catch results depend on nature — success is never guaranteed!

Schedule 🕘

The departure time is sent on LINE between 18:00 and 20:00 the day before; most bookings are morning trips.

A few things to know before you book. There are two boats. The small one is about 5.6 m long, fishes three, and has a toilet. The large one is 17.5 m long and fishes ten, and runs trips to the Tokara Islands. Small fish under about 30 cm are released where possible.

Cancellation fees rise from 25% at 30 days before to 100% at 7 days before; the boat explains that on a remote island a cancelled slot is hard to fill again.

What to Bring 🎒

☀️ Spring/Summer: Sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, plenty of water, and light snacks. The deck is fully exposed — no shade. Stay hydrated, especially on early-morning departures and the return leg.
❄️ Autumn/Winter: The sea is colder than on land. Dress at least two layers warmer than you would ashore, and bring a windproof outer layer.
👟 Footwear: Water-resistant shoes or sandals that can get wet and won't slip on a wet deck.
📦 Optional: Motion sickness tablets if you're prone to seasickness, a towel, a change of clothes, and a camera.
🚚 For travelers continuing to another city: Cool-pack delivery of your catch to your next accommodation can be arranged on request.

How to Get to Old Ushuku Fishing Port

The boat leaves from Old Ushuku Fishing Port, 2.0 km from Amami Airport, about four minutes by car; the boat's own site says five minutes. Naze is 31.6 km away, about forty-four minutes.

The captain recommends a place to stay: Rest & Lodge Sho, 2.3 km from the port, about five minutes by car. According to the boat's website, guests there get an airport transfer and the free use of a car during their stay, and if guests bring in their catch they'll cook it — not just sashimi but simmered or fried, depending on the fish — for about 3,000 yen a person, drinks extra. A packed lunch for the boat costs 650 yen.

Tomori Beach is a minute's walk from the lodge and 2.1 km from the port (4.6 across 617 Google reviews). Cape Ayamaru park is 3.4 km away, about six minutes (4.3, 1,387 reviews), and Heart Rock, a heart-shaped tide pool, 11.8 km, about fifteen minutes (3.9, 1,184 reviews).

Dinner After the Charter – Shima no Izakaya Muchakana 🍶

The dining partner for this boat is Shima no Izakaya Muchakana (島の居酒屋むちゃかな), in Naze — 32.2 km from the port, about forty-six minutes by car. It describes itself as a long-established izakaya serving fresh seafood and island dishes you can only eat on Amami, and holds a 4.2-star rating across 325 Google reviews.

Its website names sashimi of red-tailed scad, fresh sea lettuce tempura, great green turban shell sashimi, grilled wild boar and goat soup, alongside 40–50 brown-sugar shochu. Reviewers mention a sashimi platter, sea grapes and fried parrotfish, and advise booking even on weekdays.

It opens 17:00–23:00 and is closed on Wednesdays according to Google and Tabelog, though its own site also lists 17:30–0:00 with irregular closures; I'll confirm the day when booking. Cards are accepted.

Whether they will cook a catch you carry in yourself hasn't been confirmed, so please don't build the day around it; if it matters to you, I'll ring them and ask before you travel.

Why Book Your Charter Through Me?

Most Japanese fishing boats accept reservations only in Japanese.
Partner restaurants typically do not advertise "cook-your-catch" or sushi-making courses on public-facing menus.
That's why I handle all direct negotiations and arrangements — so your day runs without friction.

  • ✅ I contact the captain directly in Japanese to confirm your date, party size, and preferred fishing style.
  • ✅ Before departure, I'll walk you through the full day schedule so you arrive confident and prepared.
  • ✅ I coordinate the dining experience and meal timing at the partner restaurant so everything connects seamlessly.
  • ✅ I handle any allergy, dietary, or special-requirements communication with the restaurant.
  • ✅ If bad weather forces a cancellation, I'll immediately propose alternative sightseeing options so your day isn't wasted.
  • ✅ On-call support in English throughout the day for anything that comes up.
  • ✅ I am the only guide in Japan specialising in fishing + dining packages for international travelers.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • "I want to try fishing in Japan but have absolutely no idea where to start." 👉 That is exactly what I am here for — guiding international travelers through the whole process is my specialty.
  • "I only have one day here. Can I really fit fishing into my itinerary?" 👉 Often, yes — but departure and return times vary enormously, from pre-dawn starts to trips that finish after dark. See the Schedule section above for this boat, tell me your dates, and I'll work out what fits around the rest of your trip.
  • "Is it safe for kids and beginners?" 👉 Wearing a life jacket is the rule on Japanese charter boats, and many of the boats I work with take complete beginners. Age limits are set by each operator, though, and some do not take children at all — so check the Schedule section above, or ask me and I'll confirm before you book.
  • "I don't speak any Japanese. Will I be able to manage on the boat?" 👉 Of course. I brief you thoroughly in English beforehand and stay in contact throughout the day for anything that comes up.
  • "Can I rent fishing gear on the day?" 👉 It depends on the boat. Some hire out rods and reels; others hire out nothing but life jackets and expect you to arrive with your own tackle. I check what this boat does before you book, and if you need to bring your own I'll pass on the exact specifications it asks for.
  • "What if the weather is bad on my day?" 👉 Safety always comes first. If the charter is cancelled due to rough seas, I'll have an alternative day plan ready for you immediately.
  • "Do all plans require a minimum group size?" 👉 It varies by boat and by plan — some take solo anglers on a shared boat, while a private charter often sets a minimum. Tell me your party size and I'll find the plans that work for it.

Summary

Lure fishing on the Kuroshio off Amami Oshima — jigging, light jigging or casting — from a port five minutes from the airport, with a captain reviewers describe as gentle and careful.

Then island food and shochu in Naze. If you'd like to fish Amami, get in touch and I'll make the call for you.
