Discover Ibaraki Fishing: A Must-Try Japan Travel Experience

boat fishing

Beginner-friendly boat from Hitachi’s Kuji Port; catch your own fish and savor it at “Tuberi” in Chiba. Rentals and lunch available. Family-friendly.

Fishing. It is a traditional Japanese culture that only those who know Japan well would know about.

If you come to Japan, why not try a traditional Japanese experience rather than just visiting tourist spots?
In fact, fishing is one of Japan’s traditional outdoor pastimes. The experience of fishing in the beautiful ocean is a special pleasure known only to those in the know.
From Kuji Port, Hitachi (Ibaraki), the fishing experience with Dai 15 Daikatsumaru welcomes all levels. The nearest station is JR Omika—about 10 minutes by taxi/car—and it’s roughly 15 minutes by car from the Joban Expressway’s Hitachi-Minami Ota IC. Hook your own fresh catch, then enjoy it at a partner restaurant!

Regional Characteristics

Perched on a hillside with sweeping Pacific views, Hitachi Kamine Park blends a zoo, amusement rides, and botanical gardens in one family-friendly spot. In spring, thousands of cherry trees bloom and glow at night, while year-round panoramas capture the sea and city below. It’s an easy add-on before or after your fishing trip—perfect for photos, a stroll, or a relaxed picnic with ocean breezes.

Recommended fishing boat

Access

In Ibaraki Prefecture, we recommend Dai 15 Daikatsumaru from Kuji Port, Hitachi.
Access is easy: about 10 minutes by taxi/car from JR Omika Station. If you’re driving, it’s roughly 15 minutes from Hitachi-Minami Ota IC on the Joban Expressway.

Features

The captain’s goal is simple: make fishing feel friendly and stress-free for everyone—first-timers, casual anglers, women, and families. Since day one, they’ve offered easy, hands-free trips with rentals available, and their warm hospitality makes the boat feel like you’re out with good friends. Prefer your own group? Private charters are popular for sharing the fun together, while shared trips are also available. Don’t worry if you’re unsure about anything—the captain and crew teach patiently and kindly, so women and kids can relax and enjoy the day.

Beginners need not worry.

If you’re worried about whether you’ll be able to enjoy yourself even though you’ve never fished before, don’t worry. At Dai 15 Daikatsumaru, there is a full range of fishing rods, reels and other equipment available for rental, so even beginners can join in with ease, and with the spacious deck and clean toilets, even those who are not used to fishing can enjoy themselves in peace.

Let’s start fishing!

Early departures target seasonal favorites like hirame (flounder), madai (sea bream), bluefish (yellowtail class), and mebaru, among others. The crew is dedicated to helping you catch safely and comfortably—fun to reel in, delicious to eat!

After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!

After your trip, drive to Country House Tuberi in Asahi City, Chiba. It’s about 2.5–3 hours by car (≈200 km) via the Joban and Higashi-Kanto expressways—a scenic road trip where a sushi chef can transform your own catch into sashimi or sushi. Prefer something closer? We can suggest nearer options, too.

If you are uncomfortable with contacting them, please contact me and I will be happy to make the necessary arrangements!

If the distance feels a bit far, reach out via the Form at the end—I’ll find a nearby restaurant that can cook your catch! And if you’d rather not contact the restaurant yourself, I’ll gladly arrange it for you.

Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake

The freshness of the fish means that it doesn’t have that fishy smell, and the fresh, shiny flesh is mouth-watering.
The sight of the fresh fish being cut up by the chef’s knife and transformed into sashimi, which combines the best of both worlds, is a wonderful work of art that you can enjoy with your eyes!

The sushi chef in Japan will cut up the fish you’ve caught and serve it to you!
Is there any greater luxury than being able to fully enjoy and experience Japan? As far as I know, there isn’t.
If you consult with the manager in advance, it should be possible to have them make sushi for you!
By all means, please enjoy Japanese culture and sushi to your heart’s content!

Finally

Fishing is not just about catching fish – you can also enjoy the refreshing feeling of being in nature and the sense of fulfillment that comes from obtaining your own ingredients. Then, while reminiscing about the day’s experience and enjoying a conversation with your family or friends who went fishing with you, you can enjoy eating the delicious, freshly-cooked fish. This is a luxurious experience that can only be enjoyed in Japan!
Why not make the day you and your family or friends spend at Rinku Port Kita in Tajiri-cho, Sennan-gun, Osaka Prefecture, a special one by adding a fishing experience at JACK?
