Atami Japan Travel: Catch Fresh Fish, Relax in Onsen

boat fishing

Fishing. It is a traditional Japanese culture that only those who know Japan well would know about.

If you come to Japan, why not try a traditional Japanese experience rather than just visiting tourist spots?
In fact, fishing is one of Japan’s traditional outdoor pastimes. The experience of fishing in the beautiful ocean is a special pleasure known only to those in the know.
The fishing experience at “Hiromimaru” in Atami, Shizuoka—about 15 minutes by bus from JR Atami Station plus a short walk (or ~10 minutes by car)—lets you catch fresh fish yourself, then enjoy them right away at the partner restaurant just by the port!

Regional Characteristics

Atami Onsen is one of Japan’s most beloved hot spring areas. Just 40–50 minutes from Tokyo by Shinkansen, you’ll find seaside open-air baths, nostalgic streets, and famous hot-spring sweets. Relax in ocean-view rotenburo, stroll the retro arcade, and pair your fishing day with a soothing soak—pure Atami bliss.

Access

In Shizuoka Prefecture, we recommend a fishing experience with Hiromimaru at Atami Port.
Access is easy: from JR Atami Station, take a local bus about 15 minutes to “Ropeway-mae/Atami Korakuen,” then walk a few minutes to the pier. A taxi/car ride takes roughly 10 minutes, making it simple to add to any Atami itinerary.

Features

The captain’s philosophy is simple and kind: “We want absolute beginners, first-timers, and women to feel relaxed and have fun.” Since opening, they’ve offered easy, bring-nothing fishing with full rental gear and warm guidance. Choose a private charter to enjoy with friends, or join a shared trip—either way, the captain and crew are friendly and patient, so women and families with children can feel truly at ease.

Beginners need not worry.

If you’re wondering, “I’ve never fished—will I be okay?”, rest easy. Hiromimaru provides rental rods, reels, and basics so you can join hands-free. A spacious deck and clean restrooms make time on the water comfortable, even for first-timers. From your very first cast to that exciting first catch, the crew supports you gently so you can simply enjoy the moment.

Let’s start fishing!

The captain of JACK is totally dedicated to satisfying his customers!
The boat goes out to various areas, but the most popular trip is the “Gomoku Tsuri” trip, where you can catch a variety of fish in the nearby sea!
The fish you can catch vary depending on the season, and include sea bream, blue fish, cutlass fish, leatherfish, horse mackerel, mackerel, rockfish, and black porgy! All of them are fun to catch and a shame to eat!

After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!

After fishing with Hiromimaru, simply walk a minute or less to the partner restaurant “Kimino no Hamayaki” right by the port—no transit needed. Your fresh catch can be prepared as sashimi, tempura, grilled dishes, or even sushi by skilled chefs on the spot. If the restaurant is busy, they may not be able to handle your request, so it is essential to contact them in advance! If you are uncomfortable with contacting them, please contact me and I will be happy to make the necessary arrangements! And if this feels a bit far for your plans, please use the Form at the end—I’ll find a nearby place that can cook your fish, and I’m happy to arrange everything if contacting the restaurant feels tricky.

Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake

The freshness of the fish means that it doesn’t have that fishy smell, and the fresh, shiny flesh is mouth-watering.
The sight of the fresh fish being cut up by the chef’s knife and transformed into sashimi, which combines the best of both worlds, is a wonderful work of art that you can enjoy with your eyes!

The sushi chef in Japan will cut up the fish you’ve caught and serve it to you!
Is there any greater luxury than being able to fully enjoy and experience Japan? As far as I know, there isn’t.
If you consult with the manager in advance, it should be possible to have them make sushi for you!
By all means, please enjoy Japanese culture and sushi to your heart’s content!

Finally

Fishing is not just about catching fish – you can also enjoy the refreshing feeling of being in nature and the sense of fulfillment that comes from obtaining your own ingredients. Then, while reminiscing about the day’s experience and enjoying a conversation with your family or friends who went fishing with you, you can enjoy eating the delicious, freshly-cooked fish. This is a luxurious experience that can only be enjoyed in Japan!
Why not make the day you and your family or friends spend at Rinku Port Kita in Tajiri-cho, Sennan-gun, Osaka Prefecture, a special one by adding a fishing experience at JACK?
