Fishing: a traditional Japanese culture known only to Japan experts
If you come to Japan, why don’t you not only visit tourist attractions but also experience traditional Japanese culture? One of them is fishing. Fishing is a traditional Japanese culture known only to a limited number of Japan connoisseurs. A special day awaits you at Chidori-maru, located 10 minutes from JR Sakanoichi Station in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, where you can catch a fresh fish yourself and then enjoy the freshly caught fish at the restaurant!
Regional Characteristics
Beppu City is located on the east side of Oita Prefecture and is one of the most famous hot spring resorts in Japan, with countless hot springs gushing forth from its natural abundance. Beppu City boasts the largest amount of hot springs in Japan, and the city offers a wide variety of hot spring baths, including “Jigoku Meguri,” a tour of the various hot spring baths in Beppu City!
One of the most popular ways to enjoy Beppu’s hot springs is the “Jigoku Meguri” tour. The name “jigoku” means “hell” in Japanese because you can see the wild landscape of the hot springs, with the boiling water from the source bubbling up. The names and appearances of such hells as “Umi Jigoku” and “Boku no Ike Jigoku” are unique, and the mysterious scenery is astonishing. In particular, “Umi Jigoku,” where the blue water spreads out, is a sight to behold!
Good for eating! Good to stay! Good to eat, good to stay, and good to experience! Beppu Onsen is truly a recommended destination on your trip to Japan!
Recommended fishing boat
Access
In Beppu City, I especially recommend the fishing experience at Chidori-maru.
Access is very convenient. It takes only 10 minutes by car (cab) from the nearest JR Sakanoichi Station. You can also easily reach the fishing boat by train. Since it is easy to get there by train, it is a perfect little adventure in between trips.
Features
To ensure that even beginners can enjoy the trip with ease, the captain says, “Of course, the catch is important, but after the day is over, we are more than happy to hear you say, ‘That was fun! I’m more than happy to hear that after the day is over! That’s what I’m trying to achieve! The captain and staff are very attentive, so even women and children can enjoy their time here without worries.
Chidori-maru boasts a 12-ton boat with a capacity of 12 anglers, which is spacious enough for a small number of anglers, allowing anglers to enjoy fishing in a relaxed manner without being too conscious of others around them. Each fishing spot is also equipped with a private fishing dock, which is a great way to keep your catch fresh!
Beginners need not worry
If you are wondering, “I have never fished before, is it OK? Don’t worry. Chidzimaru offers a full lineup of rental fishing rods and reels so that even beginners can feel free to participate, and with a spacious deck and clean restrooms, even those unfamiliar with fishing can have fun without worry.
Let’s start fishing!
The “Gomoku Fishing” service is very popular, in which anglers catch a wide variety of fish in the nearby sea, and the captain of the Chidori-maru runs through the sea in all directions in search of where the fish are! Sometimes, you can catch a variety of high-end fish, such as a large Tachinoki, which is sometimes called “Dragon”, Flatfish, or a fat Leatherfish!
After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!
After fishing at Chidori-maru, take a 30-minute train ride to Sakanadokoro Chidori-maru!
The captain himself started this restaurant and is very good at processing fresh fish! One of the specialties of this restaurant is that they serve fish that the captain has just brought up that day!
The restaurant is especially famous for serving a generous portion of fresh sashimi as the first dish, which is a surprise to all first-time customers!
Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake
Freshly caught fish has no fishy smell, and its fresh and shiny flesh whets the appetite.
The fresh fish is transformed into sashimi with the best flavor under the knife of a craftsman, and it is a wonderful work of art that can be enjoyed visually as well!
The master, who loves fish so much that he is the captain of a fishing boat by day and the manager of a seafood izakaya by night, started this restaurant with a passion for fish, and his methods of preparing fish are also very skillful!
The sushi rolls are made with the freshest fish of the day and the best mix of fish that can be aged to make it tastier!
If you come to Japan, you must try it!
Finally
The fishing experience is not only about catching fish, but also about the refreshing feeling of being in nature and the fulfillment of getting your own food. Then, while enjoying a conversation with your family and friends who fished with you, you can enjoy a meal of fresh fish that has been deliciously prepared. This is a luxury experience that can only be found in Japan!
