Toyama Bay Fishing Charter: FABULA, a 28-Foot Shallow-Water Boat

Half-Day Hokuriku Shinkansen Fishing Guide

TOC

Introduction

Most inshore fishing charters in Japan are an afterthought bolted onto a bigger boat's schedule. FABULA, running out of Iwase on Toyama Bay, is the opposite — a small-boat charter built from the ground up around nothing but the shallow water close to shore, scouted personally by the captain from a rubber dinghy long before the boat itself existed. The captain's own motto is "memories over records," and once you've spent an evening watching the light change over Toyama Bay from a boat this size, it's obvious why he'd rather you remember the hour than the tape measure.

Why Iwase Is Toyama Bay's Quiet Inshore Secret

Iwase rarely makes it onto a first-time visitor's Toyama itinerary, but the old port town sits right where Toyama Bay's shallow, current-fed inshore water begins — the kind of ground a small boat can fish close to the bank rather than running miles offshore. FABULA only opened in February 2025, after its captain spent seasons exploring the shallows between Iwase and Ebie by rubber dinghy, learning the bottom by eye and by feel before he ever owned a proper boat.

That from-scratch approach shows in how the charter is run. Rather than chasing every species in the bay at once, FABULA splits the day into separate trips built around a single style of fishing at a time, so what you book is exactly the kind of Japan fishing you came for.

The Fishing Experience – Step by Step 🎣

  1. Meet in Iwase. Departure times shift with the trip: boat seabass runs in the morning and evening low-light hours, the tachiuo (hairtail) trip departs around midnight, and the rockfish and aji trips gather in the evening for a run into the night.
  2. Head out to water the captain scouted himself. Every mark FABULA fishes was found by the captain from a rubber dinghy before the boat existed, so the trip runs on local knowledge rather than guesswork.
  3. Fish a menu built around one target at a time. Whether it's boat seabass, tachiuo, rockfish, or aji, the trip you book is dedicated to that species, so the whole charter is built around it.
  4. Follow the boat's release policy on rockfish, flatfish, and seabass. FABULA asks anglers to release these species to help protect the fishery — a quick word with the captain on board sorts out anything you'd like to keep.
  5. Head back to Iwase with the night, or the evening, behind you. Most trips wrap up in time to walk straight to dinner nearby, still turning the day's fishing into the evening's plans.

Fishing Methods & Target Species

FABULA specializes in inshore, shallow-water fishing inside Toyama Bay, running a separate trip for each target rather than mixing species into one general outing.

  • Boat Seabass Jigging — a three-hour trip timed to the morning or evening low-light window, when seabass move onto the shallow water FABULA specializes in.
  • Tachiuo (largehead hairtail) — an after-midnight night fishing trip running roughly five to six hours, built around the hairtail's low-light feeding pattern.
  • Rockfish — an evening-into-night trip after rockfish such as scorpionfish and rockfish species holding tight to structure in the shallows.
  • Bachikon light jigging for horse mackerel — an evening trip targeting horse mackerel with light jigging gear over the inshore grounds.
  • Catch-and-release policy — rockfish, flatfish, and seabass are covered by the boat's release-recommended policy, a conservation stance built into how every trip is run.

Dinner After the Charter – Tenyoshi 🍶

Step off the boat in Iwase and Tenyoshi is close enough to reach on foot — about 0.22 km, a straight-line walk from the dock. The restaurant, in Iwase-Matsubara-cho, serves seafood, eel, and tempura rice bowls, open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and again from 5:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., closed on Wednesdays.

🗣️ Traveler Reviews – Why They Chose This Charter

🗣️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I'll admit I was nervous when I read there's no proper toilet on board, just an emergency one. But the crew mentioned it clearly before we even booked, so I used the restroom at the dock and never thought about it again once we were out watching the sky change color.
— Astrid (Sweden)

🗣️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
My friend and I were only two people and worried we couldn't book the trip, until we learned we could just pay for a third seat and go out anyway. Once on board, the captain explained the release policy on rockfish, and letting a fish swim back off felt oddly satisfying.
— Felix (Austria)

🗣️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Nobody mentioned that the life jacket and the ice for the cooler were both a small extra charge, but it was clearly laid out before we left the dock, so it never felt like a surprise. Afterward we just walked from the boat straight to a little restaurant for dinner, still smelling of the sea.

Budget Guide 💴

Expect to budget $200–$300 per person for the full package — this covers guide arrangement, booking negotiation with the captain in Japanese, and English-language support throughout your day. FABULA offers both shared-boat and private-charter trips, and departure windows vary by trip type. A few practical things worth knowing: there is no full bathroom on board, only an emergency toilet for the crossing, so use the restroom at the dock before you leave; a life jacket rental (a small fee, roughly $3) and ice for your cooler (also a small fee) are both arranged on the day; and every trip needs a minimum of three participants to run, though solo travelers or pairs can still go out by covering the cost of the third seat.

Fishing Difficulty 🎯

Tackle rules differ too — some boats hire out rods and reels, some hire out nothing but life jackets. I confirm this boat's rules with the operator before you book; what is already confirmed for this one is in the Schedule section above.
Note: Catch results depend on nature — success is never guaranteed!

Schedule 🕘

Departure windows differ by trip. Boat seabass jigging runs a three-hour trip timed to the morning or evening low-light hours. The tachiuo (hairtail) trip departs around midnight and runs roughly five to six hours. The rockfish and bachikon aji-jigging trips gather in the evening and run three to five hours, fishing into the night. Cancellations made seven days or more before departure are free; six to two days out, half the fare applies; the day before or on the day itself, the full fare applies. Cancellations due to bad weather or a party that falls below the three-person minimum are always free of charge.

What to Bring 🎒

☀️ Spring/Summer: Sunscreen, sunglasses, a wide-brim hat, plenty of water, and light snacks. The deck is fully exposed — no shade. Stay hydrated, especially on early-morning departures and the return leg.
❄️ Autumn/Winter: The sea is colder than on land. Dress at least two layers warmer than you would ashore, and bring a windproof outer layer.
👟 Footwear: Water-resistant shoes or sandals that can get wet and won't slip on a wet deck.
📦 Optional: Motion sickness tablets if you're prone to seasickness, a towel, a change of clothes, and a camera.
🚚 For travelers continuing to another city: Cool-pack delivery of your catch to your next accommodation can be arranged on request.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • "I want to try fishing in Japan but have absolutely no idea where to start." 👉 That is exactly what I am here for — guiding international travelers through the whole process is my specialty.
  • "I only have one day here. Can I really fit fishing into my itinerary?" 👉 Often, yes — but departure and return times vary enormously, from pre-dawn starts to trips that finish after dark. See the Schedule section above for this boat, tell me your dates, and I'll work out what fits around the rest of your trip.
  • "Is it safe for kids and beginners?" 👉 Wearing a life jacket is the rule on Japanese charter boats, and many of the boats I work with take complete beginners. Age limits are set by each operator, though, and some do not take children at all — so check the Schedule section above, or ask me and I'll confirm before you book.
  • "I don't speak any Japanese. Will I be able to manage on the boat?" 👉 Of course. I brief you thoroughly in English beforehand and stay in contact throughout the day for anything that comes up.
  • "Can I rent fishing gear on the day?" 👉 It depends on the boat. Some hire out rods and reels; others hire out nothing but life jackets and expect you to arrive with your own tackle. I check what this boat does before you book, and if you need to bring your own I'll pass on the exact specifications it asks for.
  • "What if the weather is bad on my day?" 👉 Safety always comes first. If the charter is cancelled due to rough seas, I'll have an alternative day plan ready for you immediately.
  • "Do all plans require a minimum group size?" 👉 It varies by boat and by plan — some take solo anglers on a shared boat, while a private charter often sets a minimum. Tell me your party size and I'll find the plans that work for it.

How to Get to Iwase

The Toyama Light Rail (Toyama Port Line) stops at Iwasehama Station, within walking distance of the Iwase district where the boat departs. From Toyama Station, it's about 25 minutes by rail or about 20 minutes by car. From the Hokuriku Expressway's Toyama IC, plan on roughly 25 minutes by car. From Tokyo, the Hokuriku Shinkansen to Toyama takes about two hours and ten minutes; from Osaka, plan on about three hours.

Summary

FABULA isn't trying to cover all of Toyama Bay — it's a small-boat charter built entirely around water the captain scouted himself, one trip at a time, one species at a time. Whether that means chasing boat seabass at first light, tachiuo after midnight, or rockfish under a night sky with a release-first mindset, the charter stays close to the "memories over records" idea it was built on. Walk off the boat in Iwase and dinner is a few minutes away on foot, which turns a short evening or night out on the Sea of Japan coast into a complete day rather than just a fishing trip. If a small-boat, inshore evening of Japan fishing on Toyama Bay sounds like the kind of trip worth building into your itinerary, let's talk dates.

🗣️ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I went out not knowing anything about bachikon jigging and came back with a phrase I didn't expect to learn on a boat — "memories over records." That's exactly what the evening turned into, jigging under a darkening sky with nothing to prove.
