Fishing: a traditional Japanese culture known only to Japan experts
If you’ve come to Japan on holiday, why not try something a little more adventurous than the usual sightseeing?
Fishing is a traditional Japanese cultural activity that only those who are familiar with Japan know about.
Today we will introduce the best fishing spot, which is located right by Nagasaki Station in Nagasaki City, Nagasaki Prefecture!

Regional Characteristics
Nagasaki City is home to Gunkanjima, a tourist attraction known around the world, and Isayama, a beautiful night view spot. Gunkanjima is a former coal mining island, and its ruins and history offer a unique charm to visitors. Meanwhile, the night view from Isayama was selected as one of the “New Top 3 Night Views in the World” in 2021, along with Shanghai and Monaco, and in 2022 it was certified as one of the “New Top 3 Night Views in Japan” along with Sapporo and Kitakyushu. The view of the sparkling cityscape is truly breathtaking.

Recommended fishing boat
In Nagasaki City, we would like to recommend a fishing experience on the One Piece.
The access is very convenient, and it is only 5 minutes by car (taxi) from the nearest Nagasaki Station. You can also easily reach the fishing boat by train. Since it is easy to get there by train, it is also perfect as a little adventure in between trips.
Even beginners can enjoy it with peace of mind, as the captain will teach you carefully, so you can also spend time with peace of mind even if you are with women or children. And the One Piece ship is famous for catching big fish! It’s a traditional fishing method called “Otoshikomi”, where you drop a hook and sinker into a school of small fish, and when the small fish bite the hook, you let it sink to the deep sea and catch a big fish using the small fish as bait!
Of course, rental equipment is available, so you can participate without any preparation, and the spacious boat is fully equipped with clean toilets and a rest area, so even those who are not used to fishing can enjoy it with peace of mind.

Let’s start fishing!
The captain of the One Piece is a veteran with many years of experience, and while actually fishing for the first time, he will explain how to use the equipment, so even if you are a first-timer, you can enjoy yourself straight away.
This time, he explained the fishing method called “Otoshikomi”. You drop a hook with no bait attached into a school of small fish that you have located using radar, and then wait for a large fish to bite as you drop the small fish to the seabed as bait.
As the captain lowers the line with the hook attached into the sea, the line floats up and down or twitches. It is said that this is a sign that a small fish is attached to the line
There is a wide variety of fish, and you can aim for fresh fish that are in season, but there are also many famous and minor fish, such as John Dory, flatfish, rockfish, red rockfish, yellowtail, and yellowtail amberjack. In particular, yellowtail amberjack can be caught in a frenzy, and it is said that you can catch them just by dropping the line in the water!

After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!
When you’ve finished fishing at One Piece, why not visit the restaurant, which is just a 15-minute ride away using the pick-up service! The captain himself will cook the fresh fish you’ve caught, and enjoying fresh fish that you’ve just caught is a special experience that you can only have in Japan.
The fact that the name of the restaurant and the name of the boat are the same shows the owner’s attention to detail!

Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake
Freshly caught fish has no fishy smell, and its fresh, shiny flesh whets the appetite.
The flounder has a delicate, sweet flesh with a chewy texture. The engawa (skin) in particular is fun to chew, as it bounces back against your teeth. The sweet, chewy texture of the rockfish is irresistible. And the kijihata rockfish. You can enjoy the whole fish, right down to the skin, which is said to be packed with flavor, and the sweetness and flavor oozes out with every bite!

Finally
Fishing is not just about catching fish, but also about the sense of refreshment you get from being in nature, and the satisfaction of obtaining your own food. Then, you can enjoy a delicious meal of fresh fish while reminiscing about the day’s experience with your family and friends. This is a luxurious experience that can only be enjoyed in Japan!
