Fishing: a traditional Japanese culture known only to Japan experts
If you’re visiting Japan, why not try something a little more adventurous than the usual sightseeing?
Fishing is a traditional Japanese cultural activity that only the most knowledgeable Japanese people know about.
Today we’ll be introducing the best fishing spot, which is located just outside Ajiro Port in Atami City, Shizuoka Prefecture!

Local Features
Atami is home to many hot spring facilities and tourist attractions, but the Atami Castle is a beautiful tourist spot where you can experience Japanese history and culture. From the castle tower, you can see the Atami Bay and Izu Peninsula in one view, and the spectacular view is worth a visit. In spring, the cherry blossoms that bloom around the castle are particularly beautiful, and they attract visitors. The combination of cherry blossoms and a castle is a scene that can only be seen in Japan, and it is also a great spot for taking photos!
Ajiro Port, which is about a 30-minute train ride from Atami Castle, is a beautiful fishing port in Shizuoka Prefecture that is famous for its abundant supply of fresh seafood. It is also an attractive tourist destination, and you can spend a special day there by combining it with the hot springs of Atami and nearby tourist spots. Ajiro Port is also very convenient to access, just a 5-minute taxi ride from the nearest station, Ajiro Station. The fact that you can easily visit by train is also a big plus!

Recommended fishing boat
What we would like to recommend in particular at Ajiro Port this time is the fishing experience on the Moriryu-maru.
Access is very convenient, just a 5-minute walk from the nearest station, Ajiro Station. You can easily reach the fishing boat by train. It’s easy to get there by train, so it’s perfect as a little adventure in between your travels.
Even beginners can enjoy themselves in peace, as the captain will teach you carefully, so you can relax even if you’re with women or children. The captain of Moriryu-maru is famous for being kind, and he even shares the fish he has in his care with customers who haven’t caught anything!
Of course, there are rental items available, so you can join in without any worries, and the spacious boat is also equipped with clean toilets, so even those who are not used to fishing can enjoy themselves in peace.

Let’s start fishing!
The captain of the Moriryu-maru is a veteran with many years of experience, and he provides very thorough support for beginners. He will teach you everything you need to know, from how to fish to the tricks of the trade, so even if you’ve never fished before, you’ll be able to enjoy yourself straight away.
There is a wide variety of fish to catch, and you can aim for fresh fish that are in season, but you can also catch many rare fish that don’t appear on the market, such as red-spotted beakfish, Japanese butterflyfish, and more. In particular, red-spotted beakfish are said to be very tasty, but it seems that they are rarely caught in large quantities and so they don’t often end up in places like Kanto. Also, Japanese butterflyfish with their livers full are the best sashimi.

After fishing, head to one of our partner restaurants!
After fishing on the Moriryu-maru, why not visit the “Yakiniku Tongarashi” restaurant, which is just a one-minute walk from the boat? You can have the fresh fish you caught cooked by a professional chef, and enjoying the taste of the fish you caught is a special experience that can only be had in Japan.
It’s a wonderful restaurant that’s good at fish dishes even though it’s a yakiniku restaurant!

Fresh fish dishes and delicious sake
The freshness of the fish means that it doesn’t smell fishy, and the fresh, shiny flesh whets the appetite.
The delicate white flesh of the rabbitfish is delicious enough to be compared to that of the blowfish, but when you add the rich liver, which is said to be similar to that of the monkfish, it’s irresistible.
The smooth, mild, and creamy-like liver, which has no smell at all, and the deliciousness of the elegant flesh spread out in your mouth.

The sea bream is grilled in butter to give it a deliciously savory flavor, and when you take a bite, the softness and elegant flavor spreads throughout your mouth. The outside is crispy and savory, and the inside is juicy and moist, with a firm yet fluffy texture that is hard to resist!

Recommended Atami hot spring inns
There are many attractive hotels in Atami. There is a wide range of hotels, from high-end hotels that cost over 50,000 yen (over $300) per person per night to more reasonably priced hotels that cost less than 10,000 yen (less than $65) per person per night.
Since you’ve come all the way to Japan’s famous hot spring resorts, I hope you’ll be able to enjoy them to the full! Japan is a country with good hygiene and public safety, so even a relatively inexpensive middle-end hotel costing around 15,000 yen (around 100 dollars) will be more than enough to satisfy you. I’ll introduce some recommended hotels.
